Key Findings

The national rate of new HIV infections in Swaziland, or HIV incidence, is 2.38% among adults ages 18-49.

The national prevalence of HIV in Swaziland is 31% among adults age 18-49 years. While this figure remains the highest in the world, it matches results of the 2006 Demographic Health Survey for the same age group, indicating that Swaziland’s HIV epidemic may have begun to stabilize.

Results from SHIMS serve as a baseline against which to judge the effectiveness of national HIV intervention strategies in Swaziland and have enabled Swaziland’s Ministry of Health to plan targeted HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs across the country.
